Corporate Update

The City's 'First to Kyoto' Initiative

Municipal governments are in direct or indirect control of up to half of Canada's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Recognizing that cities must take action against climate change, the City of Fredericton initiated the 'First to Kyoto' project in 2000 to explore ways we could reduce our community's GHG emissions. By investing in environmentally sustainable infrastructure and taking an active leadership role in the community, we're pacing to meet some impressive targets:

  1. Reduce corporate greenhouse gas emissions by 20% below benchmark levels by 2010
  2. Reduce community greenhouse gas emissions by 6% below benchmark levels by 2010
  3. Be the first City in Canada to attain compliance with the Kyoto protocol

We took important first steps towards these targets by identifying and quantifying the City's major sources of GHG emissions and creating an Corporate Inventory & Action Plan for Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction.  The City's GHG emissions are broken into five sectors:  Water & Sewage, Solid Waste, Buildings, Streetlights, and Vehicle Fleet.

Our corporate greenhouse gas emissions increased by only 2% between 2000 and 2004, far below emission increases by most other Canadian cities. To meet our First to Kyoto commitments, we must reduce GHG emissions to just over 20% below current levels.  Our Corporate Action Plan, approved by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), outlines strategies to achieve GHG reductions in all five of the City's emissions sectors.  We have already taken big steps by retrofitting many municipal buildings and developing a strong energy reduction program. We're moving ahead with even more progressive and innovative changes for our City and our community when we launch our Green Matters Campaign on June 13th at City Hall. Click here for more info.
